St. John of the Cross Religious Education Program
Student/Parent Handbook

April 2008

Dear Families,

The Religious Education Program at St. John of the Cross Church involves children in Grades 1 through high school. Elementary and middle school classes meet weekly at MES, LMES, and MMS. The high school program meets monthly in Father Fanning Hall. Three G.I.F.T. events (intergenerational learning opportunities) are part of the curriculum and are scheduled throughout the school year. There is no fee for these gatherings.

The fee and registration schedule for Religious Education Classes for the 2008-2009 school year for grades one through ten is attached. We hope that you will take advantage of the many opportunities to register your child(ren) by June 9th. In that way, it will allow us the planning time needed to continue to have a successful program.

Please note that there are two fee categories, participating and non-participating parishioners. Participating parishioners are those who have formally registered as members by completing a parish census form, who regularly participate in the life, worship, and ministry of the parish, especially weekly celebration of the Eucharist, and who support our parish through their regular presence and through financial contributions by using the parish envelopes. The non-participating parishioners do not meet the criteria above, but wish to enroll their children in the Religious Education Program.

Many volunteers will be needed for the coming 2008-2009 school year. Won’t you consider volunteering in the Religious Education Program? Without your help, we cannot offer the best program to our children and youth! Please take the time to complete the enclosed Stewardship form and think about where you might be able to volunteer.

If you have any questions, please call the Religious Education Office.

Sincerely,

Annette A. Williams
Director of Religious Education

The reason for the difference in the fee scale is that participating parishioners are already contributing regularly to the support of the parish. We will determine who is contributing to the financial support of the parish through the weekly use of envelopes. Our Religious Education Program is subsidized from those contributions.

Any difficulty in paying these fees must be discussed with our pastor and is kept confidential. All children are welcome and will not be kept from admission due to inability to pay.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,

Annette A. Williams, DRE
