Preventing child sexual abuse is the goal of the Safe Environment program of the Archdiocese of Hartford. This program includes procuring background checks on employees, volunteers, staff, etc. who have contact with children and young people on a regular basis as well as an awareness training session.

Every Catholic diocese in the United States is mandated by the national Council of Catholic Bishops, through the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People initiated by the Bishops in June, 2002, and revised in June, 2005, to have safe environment programs in place in every parish to assist parents and children, and those who work with children, in preventing harm to young people. In the Archdiocese of Hartford, we have two programs, Protecting God’s Children™ for Adults, and the Child Lures Prevention program for diocesan school children and parish religious education children.

It is required that all adults be in full compliance before they begin their ministry.
